Hello lovely Kiwiburners,

The folks who take care of the administrative side of the event are trying to figure out when the schedule Kiwiburn 2008.

Tentatively, it looks like Kiwiburn will once again run 72 hours (3 days): for instance 10AM on a Friday to 10AM on a Monday. Kiwiburners setting up registered theme camps, registered art pieces, or volunteering will be invited to arrive up to 2 days before Kiwiburn officially opens.

Kiwiburn will once again be at the beginning of February, but because of the dates for public holidays and the start of the school term, we have some difficult decisions about exactly when.

We have come up with a couple of possible schedules, but we are open to more suggestions.

Our goal is to have as many people be able to attend as possible!

What do you think?

Holidays, start of school term, other festivals:

Monday 28 Jan: Auckland holiday
Monday 4 Feb: Nelson Holiday
Wednesday 6 Feb: Waitangi Day
Thursday 7 Feb: School Term Begins

SPLORE and other festivals: when is splore happening? We don’t know, but we’ve talked to them and it doesn’t look like we will be in conflict. We will wait for news about their dates before we decide for sure. Are there any other festivals with which anyone sees a possible conflict?

Any other conflicts or considerations we might have missed?

Sample schedules:

Wednesday 6 Feb: Waitangi Day: Registered theme camp, art, and volunteer arrival
Thursday 7 Feb: School Term Begins; Registered theme camp, art, and volunteer arrival
Friday 8 Feb: Kiwiburn opens 10 AM
Saturday 9 Feb: Kiwiburn; weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Sunday 10 Feb: Burn Night
Monday 11 Feb: Kiwiburn ends 10 AM
Tuesday 12 Feb: Final clean up day

Friday 1 Feb: Registered theme camp, art, and volunteer arrival
Saturday 2 Feb: Registered theme camp, art, and volunteer arrival
Sunday 3 Feb: Kiwiburn opens 10 AM
Monday 4 Feb: Nelson Holiday; Kiwiburn; weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Tuesday 5 Feb: Burn Night
Wednesday 6 Feb: Waitangi Day; Kiwiburn ends 10 AM
Thursday 7 Feb: School Term Begins; Final clean up day

What do you all think Question

My only input on this is that I believe it to be common practice that the end date be some time later that the start date.

.... events that are over before they begin usually get a bad reputation.

Other than that... yes.

But if it starts after it ends doesn't it go on forever? Sounds kind of fun to me Very Happy

This is true, and then we all get to experience the end of the universe (and potentially the beginning of a new one), although some people might be experiencing that at KiwiBurn regardless Wink

This is feedback from Strypie on the taniwha email list:

When is Parihaka next year? It was just after New Year's this year but has
tended to shift around a bit. Might be worth contacting CultureFest about their
planned dates for 2008:
http://culturefest.org.nz/

Both these events are wicked and it would be good to engineer things so Burners
could go to both events if they were so inclined. I am keener on the earlier Feb
dates. I missed this year's Burn due to a clash with a uni field trip (10-22
Feb) and I'd be thrilled if I didn't miss next year as well.

Hi folks Very Happy

The way I see it, we have two different choices to make.

First, we need to decide whether kiwiburn is oriented toward the weekend before or the weekend after Waitangi, which is on Wednesday.

The earlier weekend has the benefit of being before school term starts, but it doesn't really get any benefit from Waitangi, where at least with the later weekend folks coming out early to do theme camps or art or volunteer might get some benefit out of Waitangi.

We also need to decide whether to have the main days of kiwiburn during the weekend or during the week. If they are during the week then we get some benefit from Waitangi day, but if they are during the weekend, well, that's the weekend, which is like Waitangi day all the time.

I think it is important to go for the earlier weekend so that we don't keep people from coming because they have kids.

I think the benefit from the weekend is also more important than the benefit from Waitangi. So this is how I would do it:

Monday 28 Jan: Auckland holiday
Wednesday 30 Jan: Registered theme camp, art, and volunteer arrival
Thursday 31 Jan: Registered theme camp, art, and volunteer arrival
Friday 1 Feb: Kiwiburn opens 10 AM
Saturday 2 Feb: Kiwiburn; weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Sunday 3 Feb: Burn Night
Monday 4 Feb: Nelson Holiday; Kiwiburn ends 10 AM
Tuesday 5 Feb: Final clean up day
Wednesday 6 Feb: Waitangi Day
Thursday 7 Feb: School Term Begins

Sorry - Johnny come lately and all - but Waitangi Day has significance - it would be a great day to be out and about with burners... and it's also Bob Marley's birthday...

if you shuffle the dates over by one day you can open gates at 10am saturday (which is a good start day for any 3-day burners who can only afford one day off work - better to take off Monday than Friday?) then close 10am Tuesday - leaving Waitangi Day for cleanup and any other little last-minute close-down ceremonies that could be planned to remember Marley and celebrate Aotearoa? Im not starting a crusade here - but if it's doable it would be great to get Waitangi in there a little closer.....

Also - why 10am? Why not a use a more organic way to do it - like sunrise and sunset? or moonrise/moonset.... just an idea since noone reallly has the time on them....

im going to bed - too much late-night unhelpful interference from me.....

Good suggestions, Irant!

Yes, we could joggle the day over by one, have official start on Saturday. Disadvantage is, that makes the burn on Monday.

Would we lose people if we did that?

Offline discussion has so far very much wanted to keep the burn on the last day of the event, building up the energy, building up the community. Especially if many folks are not arriving until Saturday, official start, this seems very important. Does anyone have any opinion about switching the burn day?

Sunrise/sunset is nice too, rather than 10am. There may be some practical aspects to 10am that I am not aware of, however.

no matter what night we burn him it will advantage some and disadvantage others.

If we were a comercial event we would have the burn on a Friday or Saturday night... these are the only two burn nights that I would STRONGLY OPPOSE.

... for a bunch of reasons but mainly that the burning of the man is not the "main event" ... the main event is every moment that you are there and sharing with other burners...

Burning the man is more like the school bell ringing at the end of a holiday... everybody has to pack up and revert back to your default settings...

If people can come only for the weekend- I would rather that they could have personal interactions with burners, than a set performance and cerimonial burning...

...just thoughts..

If numbers are the goal here... then it seems the aims have shifted.
Let's just have a great event... people will come Smile

I agree Myles-- I don't think we should burn on Saturday. I was just putting it out there for discussion, trying to be all inclusive, you know?

In terms of numbers, I think the goal here is to expose people to the magic that is kiwiburn. Is there some other measurable concept with which to compare the different date alternatives? And if we don't have a measure by which to compare them, then how do we decide on which dates to select?

i agree...no hang on i disagree....oh shit i think i agree to disagree....but who with?
i agree with myles that kiwiburn is about participation and not just the burn
i agree with bruce that kiwiburn is about participation and not just the burn
i agree with irant that waitangi day does have significance
and then i agree with myself that we should include it at the end of kiwibrun08
my reasen once again is that people will find any excuse to have monday and tuesday off work or whatever before waitangi day so we will give them an excuse or a reasen to do it kiwiburn......

there has been a committee decision to remain with 3 days/72 hrs as this year, so it does impose some restrictions when looking at the start/stop of KB08 leading up to waitangi day
that being said i say start the official time at midnight saturday 2nd thru to midnight tuesday the 6th being burn night
we all know that with set up and tear down the times and dates do get blurred so it's not like we have to start and stop at a precise minute

the promotional material and tickets etc can say the offical times and dates which we did this year but we just glide time the event to suit

so i agree with me

Kiwi's idea sounds great to me. For us Aucklanders the Friday evening traffic is a pain especially if you can't get out of work early. Which means turning up late, tired and having to camp in the dark..

I don't know what Welly Friday night traffic is like - but you peeps have a 2hr longer journey anyway don't you?

Hehe last year, almost all the Wellington burners were there before Friday anyway. But no, our problems are nowhere near as bad - around an hour sitting in traffic on a bad Friday, practically none on a good one.

Dates matter not to me, I'll be there before it starts and around to help with cleanup too. I have a flexible job and no kids to think about. So I really don't care when it's held, I'll be there.

My only strong preference is that the burn be held on the final night of the festival, for the community buildup/involvement to have most of the festival to grow.
