Getting to Whakamaru
from Tokoroa (if you come from Auckland
or Hamilton)
Find your way to Tokoroa. As
you come out on the Taupo side of Tokoroa, there is a turnoff
to your right (SH 32
or Whakamaru Road) that is signposted to
Mangakino and Turangi. Take
this road, stay on it and in approximately 30km, you will come
to Whakamaru Dam. You cross the dam and head into Whakamaru.
You will not pass through Mangakino, and it is suggested that
if you are travelling at night, you stop for last-minute supplies
in Tokoroa.
Getting to Whakamaru
from Rotorua (if you come from Bay
of Plenty)
Head south from Rotorua on SH5.
Approximately 2km out of town, SH 30 is on your right. Take this road and stay on it to the end
(approximately 35km), where you turn left onto SH 1 towards
Taupo. Travel down this road approximately 6km,
till you come to a turnoff to your right that is signposted
to Te Kuiti (SH 30 again). Take
this turnoff and follow this road to the end, where it meets
SH 32 from Tokoroa. Here you turn left and very shortly cross
a large dam, and into Whakamaru township.
If you are travelling at night, your last town for supplies
is Rotorua.
Getting to Whakamaru
from Turangi (Wellington,
other Southerners including folk from Wanganui)
Make your way to Turangi by whatever means you think is best. For those coming from Wellington, the turnoff is to your left
about 1km before you get into the main part of Turangi, it's
SH 41. For those coming from Wanganui, you'll be
on SH 47 (Te Ponanga Saddle Rd) and you'll come to the end of
that and turn left onto SH41 in between Turangi and Tokaanu. Either of you, once you're on SH 41, head
west for approximately 15km till you come to a very small locality
with a dairy on the corner and a turnoff to the right. This locality is called Kuratau Junction
and the road you turn into is SH 32, otherwise known as the
Western Bay Road,
and is signposted Tihoi, Mangakino, Tokoroa.
Keep following SH 32 for approximately 65 km, and where the
road ends at a T junction, you are in Whakamaru.
Turn left (towards Te Kuiti) at this junction to take
you to KiwiBurn.
For those coming from the south, your last large town for stocking
up with supplies is Turangi.
Getting to Whakamaru
from Taumarunui (If you've travelled through the lovely Whangamomona Road from Taranaki/Stratford)
Head out of Taumarunui towards National Park on SH 4. About 5km out of town, turn left onto SH
41. About 30 km along
here, start looking out for Kuratau Junction and the left turn
onto SH 32 (Western Bay Road). There's a small store on the corner and
it's signposted Tihoi, Mangakino, Tokoroa.
Follow this for approximately 65km and where the road
ends at a T junction, you are in Whakamaru.
Turn left at this junction to take you to KiwiBurn.
Your last large town for stocking up with supplies is Taumarunui.
Getting to Whakamaru
from Te Kuiti
From Te Kuiti, follow SH 30 east for approximately 80km, just
stay on this road and it will take you directly to Mangakino
(your last town for supplies).
To get from Mangakino to Whakamaru, stay on SH 30 which
makes a 90 degree right turn at Mangakino, and head southeast
towards Whakamaru. After you pass Waipapa Road, Whakamaru Domain is on
your left, just (3.5km) before you get to Whakamaru township,
and will be well signposted.
To get to KiwiBurn from
Whakamaru
Head out of Whakamaru towards Mangakino (northwest) on SH 30. Whakamaru domain is 3.5km from Whakamaru
township, on the right, and will be well signposted.
